Reasons Why I Love Gardening

Gardening can be both rewarding and exhausting. Depending on the person, the motivation and passion of doing it require a significant amount of consideration. As for me, I love gardening because I find myself enjoying everything about it. Yes, I get to feel exhausted sometimes, but that is not enough reason for me to quit spending my time in my garden. Why is that? Well, here are my personal reasons for loving gardening so much.

We forget we are of the natural world. This approach does not understand that symptoms are only a small part of what really needs our attention. — Aylee Welch, LICSW

It Gives Me Peace

When I am gardening, I can set my mind to only one thing – finish what I am doing. Not only it does keep me concentrated, but it also allows me to have a sense of awareness on things that surround me. Everything feels light and comfortable. It is as if the whole process of managing and organizing my plants and flowers are the best things I can do every day. There is this positive energy that pulls me away from the emotional and mental toxicity. There is too much peace everywhere, and I can say that I pretty much love it because I know I deserve that moment of silence.

It Makes Me Happy

Nothing makes me happier when I am alone with my plants. I get to witness their growth. It makes me appreciate life and the wonder of God’s creation. I feel entitled to live fully with no hesitations and full of confidence. The whole process of gardening makes me happy because I enjoy the task of taking care of something. It feels like serving my purpose on doing things for the betterment of my emotional and mental health. It makes me appreciative of my existence because I know I am contributing something good, not only for other people and me but as well as the environment.

Getting your hands dirty, weeding, and planting can feel calming, almost like a meditation. Plus it puts you in contact with soil (which is good for your microbiome), boosts your levels of vitamin D (from the sun), and exposes you to fresh air. — Tchiki Davis, Ph.D.

It Releases My Stress

Not only I can manage my day, enhance my skills, and be with my plants; I can also care for my mental health when I am gardening. It helps in releasing my stress, and I feel a lot comfortable with myself. There is this enhancement in my mood as well, which allows me to understand each of their differences. Gardening allows me to control my thoughts and feelings without depriving myself of releasing what I should feel and think as of the moment. It is more of enhanced control over my mind, body, and soul. Every time I talk to the plants and rant about something, I tend to feel out of burden. It seems like magic but being surrounded by the beauty of nature makes me feel so much okay.

Feeling good around plants is probably not surprising. After all, we surround ourselves with plants during celebrations and tragedies (i.e., weddings and funerals, respectively). — Jonathan S. Kaplan Ph.D.

Some of these reasons may or may not be the ones some people have. But for me, these are the best I can get from gardening. Yes, I get dirty, stinky, and exhausted at times, but that is entirely okay. I love gardening for it is the best reason that keeps in safe emotionally, physically, and mentally. You should try it more often and experience the greatness it can provide.

Let’s Talk About Gardening And Mental Health

Have you ever wonder how some other people maintain their enthusiast in gardening while suffering from a mental illness? Have you ever thought about their gardening methods that keep up with their anxiety and depression? For sure, you already know that gardening has a lot of benefits. But what are the specifics of maintaining the energy in the process when it comes to its relation to mental health? Let’s find some inspiration in this article.

Community gardens not only provide fresh food uncontaminated by plastic or other chemicals—they can help reduce feelings of depression. Whether it’s through the act of gardening, the social support of the community, or just getting outside, community gardens are a great plant-driven tool to boost well-being. — Tchiki Davis, Ph.D.

Mental health is an entirely great subject, especially when people get focused on dealing with it at any cost. But what genuinely takes most attention is keeping its momentum. You see, some people, even if they know things are better for them, they often experience losing the interest in continuing what they have to do. Perhaps that is because some of the emotional and mental struggles they have become too much to bear. With that, instead of pushing forward, they take a moment of silence and pause. And not knowing that the split second of not doing anything can damage everything significantly.

Gardening As A Sense Of Duty

Perhaps the most fundamental reasons why other people can maintain their enthusiasm in gardening are because they look at it as a sense of duty. Some mentally ill people do not see gardening and landscaping as a hobby, but rather a task they need to fulfill every day. As you can notice, the positivity of working on it and thinking about it as something that completes someone’s day is priceless. With that, people will never view gardening as a time-waster, effort-burden, and a not-so-important thing to do. Instead, it will become a valuable duty that requires concentration, attention, effort, and time.

I like to say when animals are served up as a meal it’s a matter of “who’s” for dinner, not “what’s” for dinner. Perhaps some will want to reconsider how they refer to a plate full of vegetables. — Marc Bekoff Ph.D.

Appreciating The Benefits Of Gardening

There are tons of gardening benefits that this article can list. There is the improvement of emotional stability, promotion of mental wellness, increased self-worth awareness, well-functioned self-confidence, and self-care improvements. All of those things are possible with the help of a simple task that requires nothing but passion and dedication. You see, gardening does not limit its potential in stress reduction because not only it helps in holistic development; it also provides a sense of accomplishment. It is one of the strengthening factors that allow people to stay on track and focused. Not only in gardening but as well as the essential things in their lives. Gardening allows a better understanding of emotional, physical, and mental health.

The presence of green leafy plants has also been linked to enhanced creative thinking. No matter what we’re up to in life, thinking more creatively is generally useful — it’s usually handy while we work at our jobs, but also when we reason with toddlers or teenagers, and as we’re trying to re-combine our clothes into a new and more interesting wardrobe. — Sally Augustin Ph.D.

Things To Ponder

In the expansion of treatments and therapy, gardening, in the form of horticultural therapy appears to receive professional legitimacy. That is because the spring of combination from physical activity, cognitive stimulation, and awareness of natural surroundings are put to work together. The whole process builds a therapeutic effect that contains no side effects at all. Yes, the process of gardening can sometimes become muddy and dirty, but so what? That is the whole point of it. It is not perfect, but the life and hope it gives to those mentally ill individuals are priceless.

How Nature Can Positively Affect Your Mental Health

Nature has a lot of healing effects. Studies conducted have found a connection between an increase in the positive impact of mental health and being surrounded by nature. A few minutes with nature can calm your mind and eliminate negative emotions. Therapists will even agree to that. So what can we do to be around nature even for a few minutes each day?

Urban Planners: Who Are They And What Do They Do?

When you look at how the parks and commercial buildings in your neighborhood are rising increasingly these days, do you ever wonder who’s behind making decisions on what best to put up and where to put it up in the community? Like who decided that it was a good move to open a cinema in the corner of that block? Who gave the approval for the new deliveries for a building that’s currently being constructed a few blocks from your home? As far as I know, the architect designed my home, the painter did the paint job, and my psychologist and therapist friends are helping me get through my daily stressors. As for the questions I mentioned above, it was my dad who walked me through the details about the urban planner.

Urban planning up until today remains to be something fresh – relatively – and some people still find their job unfamiliar, particularly the nature of their job and what it encompasses. But despite being a fairly new line of work, it is projected to grow tremendously, which was apparent since 2012 and continues to grow. It is believed to soar even higher in 2021 through 2022. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the yearly salary of a licensed urban planner is approximately $65,000.

What Do Urban Planners Really Do?
Ericka is 32 and has been working in the field of urban planning for ten years now. When asked what she specifically does and what it entails to be an urban planner, she answered that she is more into planning policies and creates plans for transportation and infrastructure. Sometimes, she does strategic planning, which pertains to discovering the concrete problems in transportation or planning that need immediate and eventual solutions. For example, if individuals are staying in one part of a community and there are possible open occupations, a school, or a shopping center in another part of the community, what can she do to create a connection between these two institutions?

Aside from that, she can also be involved in knowing how many people are there in that particular area? Can these areas possibly grow and improve? Does the area need a train or a bus? Then even the very delicate task of designing, constructing, and delegating, which means working hands-on in the field to find out which works before opening a certain structure to the public.

Technically, the urban planner functions as an advocate in making plans to do the best for the community in general. That is the goal to be able to successfully create something that can function for the betterment of a community. Land use, transportation, economic development, code enforcement, and urban design are among the job descriptions of urban planners. The American Planning Association lists some of the duties below:
• Make plans for open spaces, parks, and community amenities like public toilets and other accommodations.
• Study and investigate the trends for transportation and implement plans that are customized to the needs of the community.
• Create plans and programs that promote jobs for community members.
• Work that guarantees sufficient sewer and water supply for the community.

What Is The Urban Planner’s Work Environment?
They are usually hired by the state or city government. Some jobs are geared towards the rural regions, but most of the planners work in the city. Just like other employees working in a corporate company, urban planners must also display a show of teamwork because they are tasked to work with other people from other fields – architects, real estate contractors, and non-profit organizations, among others. Most of them work the 8 to 5 shift but occasionally join small meetings during the evenings or weekends.

How Does One Become An Urban Planner?
An urban planner must acquire a master’s degree in urban and regional planning. Master’s programs are focused on improving communication and problem-solving skills that are important to the urban planner’s success in his field. When he is certified, he is responsible for a lot of relevant aspects that make a community function normally and efficiently. Most often, these things are taken for granted as people go about in their day-to-day activities. Some of us pass by a village without even thinking twice about who the builders are and who made the decision to improve the area. Well, now you know, and it would be great to know something planned for your community and the neighboring communities as well.

Mental Health Guide: How To Prevent Stress At Work

Working in the field of urban planning or engineering is not an easy thing to do because every decision you make can affect not only the present circumstances but also the future ones. Because of this, you may start to feel a lot of stress in your workplace to the point that your mental health would suffer. Aside from this, your inner desire to succeed may also result in working too hard until you experience exhaustion.

The sad thing about experiencing all the things I mentioned above is that they can affect the productivity of a person. As such, there is a high chance that you would commit mistakes and errors in your job. As already emphasized above, that cannot happen because one wrong move can lead to a chaotic future for your client, especially when it involves the government of the state. Be sure to read the article from start to the bottom if you want to find out more about the strategies or techniques to eliminate or prevent stress in the workplace:

Do Not Overwork Yourself

The first tip that you must never forget is to be chill when it comes to working in the office or even in the field. As much as possible, avoid overworking yourself so that you will not feel down or exhausted for the entire day. If you believe that you can no longer complete a given assignment on a particular deadline, do not hesitate to assign it to someone else. Let that person take over so that you can avoid unnecessary stress.

On the other hand, there are other ways to prevent exhaustion and increased stress levels. You can do that by reaching to BetterHelp, an online therapy platform with professional and trustworthy counselors who can guide you through the ways in which you can manage your anxieties and stresses while living a happy life. Avoid Office Gossip

Always remind yourself that talking behind your boss’ back or your friends’ will not do you any good. Instead, it will only increase the presence of negative or bad vibes in your life. Just because others are doing it does not mean that you also need to follow. Be firm in taking a stand about talking negatively against others. The smart thing to do is to avoid the very same persons who enjoy backbiting so that you will not end up just like them.

Any person can learn to practice self-compassion when they begin to notice the usual negative tape playing in their heads or feel the dreaded, familiar pangs of disappointment. In fact, that is exactly the time to do it. — Jillian Winters, MA, LCPC, NCC

Take A Break

Whenever you are at work, be sure that you know how to take a break so that you will not feel tired. Remember that overworking yourself can only lead to fatigue, which ultimately results in low productivity. Instead of getting more things done, you will end up delaying your reports or outputs. If this continues to happen, your boss or workmates may start to become disappointed with your actions. It does not mean that you have to be absent for the day to take a break. You can always rest or break from work during lunchtime or snack time, as long as you know how to it right.

Go On Vacation

If you have the necessary budget and vacation leave credits, then do not be afraid to travel on your own. Now is the time to take a long break from work and spend the day having fun in a nearby town or another country. Go to a place that you have never visited in the past so that you can experience that incredible feeling of being in a new area. However, it is imperative on your part to ask for explicit permission before you take a mini-break to ensure that you still have work to come back to after the vacation.

Organize Your Desk

Keep in mind that your surroundings can also affect your mental health and productivity level? Having a messy desk or workplace can result in a cluttered mind. You will start to experience difficulty in making a decision or doing your job. Because of this, it is best if you will begin to tidy up your area in the office. Be sure that everything is organized well. You will be surprised by how a little act of cleanliness on your part can already improve your mood and overall well being.

We log long hours at work with the fear of losing our jobs through downsizing hanging over our heads. Then we fight rush hour traffic to get home in time to be super-parents, putting dinner on the table, helping our kids with their homework, and checking in with friends and family members we feel we have neglected because we are so overwhelmed. — Denise Cummins Ph.D.

Stress is only part of any work, which is why you have to be a master on how to deal with such an issue. However, once you noticed that you are already outnumbered, do not hesitate to seek professional help. Sometimes, all it takes is to talk to a therapist or counselor to help you.

Embracing Positivity

Take note that what you think the most can affect the circumstances in your life. If you continue to think of negative thoughts, you can attract more adversity in your day-to-day life. On the other hand, if you continue to make an effort to embrace good thoughts and emotions, you can experience positive changes in your life. As such, it is always ideal to know what you want and embrace positivity. In so doing, you can improve your behavioral health.

I suggest you try the strategies that seem appropriate for your needs and work on developing your own. — Carey Heller, PsyD

What Are The Effects Of Rapid Urbanization On Mental Health

More people are moving from rural to urban areas with hopes for better lives.  This preference forces countries to follow the trend of urbanization.  Thus, bringing in changes in the social, environmental, and economic status.  Changes that do not always mean growth, progress, and efficiency.

Across multiple continents, urbanization has been linked to relative increases in mental health problems. — Glenn Geher Ph.D.

Urbanization has its advantages and disadvantages.   It may be a sign of economic growth and improvement in the standard of living of “some” families.  But sometimes, the economic growth is not enough to feed everyone who comes to the city, not even enough to provide everyone with a job that can sustain a family.  Thus, most of them, especially the unskilled ones, end up as informal settlers.

Home To Poverty

People from the rural areas are attracted by the lights and noise of the city.  They taught that in moving to the city, they would find milk and honey.  Often, what awaits them is the exact opposite.

The influx of people in the city increases the level of poverty and pollution.  With poverty, crime rate upsurges.  The increase in the number of informal settlers charges up pollution.  These pollutants often bring health issues (physical and mental) (garbage, dirty swamps, blocked drains, and more).

Impact To Mental Health

Poverty can have a significant impact on mental health.  Moving from rural to the urban area can expose you to hardships and dangers.

Stress-related illnesses exact a tremendous cost in urban society, both personal and economic. — Colin Ellard Ph.D.

Having little or no social support in a busy place where everything happens so fast can make you more vulnerable to mental disorders.  Being used to the slow life in the countryside, you might experience the shock that could lead to developing anxiety and depression.

Mostly, the young adults are the ones who are eager to move into the city.  They are the age group who are supposed to be the most productive, yet more vulnerable to be burdened by mental health issues.

Vices, Crime, And Family Disintegration

With progress comes complexity and chaos.  Chaos often results in people being hooked on vices and committing a crime.  The disorder causes family breakdown and the ones most affected are the children.  What’s the use of progress and how will we see the future when the children of today are suffering from a mental breakdown brought by the collapse of the basic unit of our society?

Economic progress is good, but if enjoyed only by few, can result in socio-economic stress.  The stress and other forms of mental health issues cause an increase in violence and crimes that can be associated with alcohol, drugs and other substance abuse, and other vices.

Those who find it hard to thrive in the city end up suffering from depression.   They sometimes feel hopeless which pushes them to commit a crime, some even would think of committing suicide to end their tribulation.

Neuroscientific and behavioural insights have been used successfully in a number of building projects within the health and education sectors and from the design of ‘healthy cities’ to sustainable neighbourhoods. — Jessica Pykett Ph.D.

The elderly who are left alone in their homes in rural areas have no one to care for them.  Some can’t even work and have no source of income.  They are only relying on the money being sent by their children who moved to the city.  The neglected older population can also suffer from loneliness, anxiety, and exposure to more health issues, both physical and mental.

Are you among the elderly who need guidance with their mental and emotional health in the midst of all these changes? The BetterHelp team is able and ready to talk to you and guide you into keeping yourself open and positive about life. You may check out this link for client reviews, or you can learn more about how you can get counseling through this link.

It’s time to re-think and spread awareness about urbanization.  The pros and cons it can do to families who wanted to move to the city.  The government must initiate campaigns and programs to help improve their lives so they can have a choice to stay in the countryside.

We yearn so much for a worldly life that the bright and colorful city lights blind us.   We see them as a depiction of fame and success.  We failed to realize that it is more of a concrete jungle where no one is safe and only the fittest survive.
